Bradford Town defeated Newquay AFC 5-0 at Trowbridge Road on Saturday 10th January in a match where the Blues were looking to avenge a narrow 3-2 defeat away in Cornwall at the start of the season.
There were early signs of what was to come with a chance being created by Jensen Wakefield and Owen Allison being cleared by the Newquay defence. Wakefield continued to stay involved in the attack, which would set the tone for the afternoon, regaining possession after an effort was blocked following a corner in the 13th minute. He was more successful with his second attempt, and nestled the ball into the bottom left corner to fire us into the lead.
Wakefield nearly made it a brace for himself with another attempt in the 36th minute, but the shot found itself wide of the far post. We won another corner in the 43rd minute and Wakefield was able to connect to the delivery with a powerful header, however it was saved by the Newquay goalkeeper. Our number sixteen had been nothing but a threat to the Newquay since kick-off, and he put his name on the scoresheet for the second time in the first minute of first half stoppage time. The forward received the ball on the edge of the box before firing it into the bottom left corner with a perfectly placed shot just before the stroke of half-time. This saw us enter the break at Trowbridge Road with a 2-0 advantage.Β Β
The second half began in spectacular fashion with a Jaiden Pearce overhead kick in the 50th minute, which narrowly went above the crossbar. The 53rd minute saw us look to the bench for the first time, with Curtis Dunn replacing Owen Allison. Our skipper, Fabian Stanislas, sent a fizzed ball across the face of goal in the 58th minute which was met by Jensen Wakefield, slotting past the goalkeeper and sealing his hat-trick.
The 67th minute saw another change take place, as Charlie Maddison came on for Fabian Stanislas following a booking for our captain. We were awarded a free-kick in the 73rd minute, which was driven into the area by Shanley, before being half cleared to the edge of the box by the Newquay defence. It was then collected by Charlie Maddison, and sent into the top right corner with a stunning effort, putting Bradford Town 4-0 up.
That wasn’t to be the final action of the match as Jensen Wakefield, already on a hat trick, somehow outdid himself once again in the 79th minute. After receiving a pass from Maddison, he struck an incredibly well placed half-volley over the goalkeeper, capping off an incredible day for him, as well as making it 5-0 to Bradford Town.
Our final changes took place in the 83rd minute, when Theo Black, Harvey Woods, and Josiah McKayle came on for Tom Mack, Jensen Wakefield, and Leo Gallazi.
The score remained 5-0 when the final whistle sounded, making it five wins in a row for the Blues. We will be in action again on Saturday 17th January, when we welcome Devizes Town to Trowbridge Road for the Les Phillips Cup Quarter-Final.
